Shifters
The governement gathered together a group of scientists, lured in by a grand paycheck. Their task, Project Drift; to inject unborn fetuses with animal DNA. There were several purposes to these experiments. Some scientists wanted to simply see what the DNA will do to a growing fetus, some wanted to see if they can find immunities to illnesses with the new DNA, and others wanted to see the outcome... all of these scientists were under government watch. Most of the fetuses died from DNA that did not take or badly deformed mutations. The group of test subjects that did survive to birth was the group injected with three different types of animal DNA. This first surviving group was named Gen 1.
The scientists were not expecting this. Though the children grew at a normal human rate, their minds grew much faster. The toddlers were able to carry on full conversations with each other in the lab nursery. It was then when they took the children and performed different experiements on them. The experiments were mostly cruel. It was the mixture of physical stress and extreame emotion that caused the first of the changing. The children started shifting into animal forms... and what the goverment scientists learned, the military found out and desperately wanted.l
Gen 1 were teenagers now. Other Generations were not too far behind. The military had put in an order and a very large donation to create a small army of speciallized soldiers, the scientists agreed.
Gen 1 did not. The teens decided that this had gone too far, and made a break for it. They could only see disaster if the military got ahold of shapeshifting soldiers so they decided to act against it. Before they left they hid notes in the labratory only in places of which the animal forms of their younger brothers and sisters could find. The notes recalled the collected history of Gen 1, and how the others are to escape and join the band of shapeshifting teenagers...
...of course, not all the kids of the other Generations wanted to fight against the scientists. After all, they did give them the wonderful gift of transforming into animals! Only Gen 1 went through the cruel experiments, the other Generations did not. They were well cared for even if the price to pay was military service, they were promised full compensation for their efforts. One of the notes left behind was given to the scientists, and the scientists banded together their own team to take Gen 1 and the others who ran away to them down.
